The Blueprint 1543 team concluded 18 months of qualitative research, summarily called “In Search of Theological Scientists” (ISOTS), and emerged with 5 important themes and 20 specific project sketches for activating progress in science-engaged theology. These findings have been thoughtfully captured in two documents: “A Strategy Document for Funding Bodies” and “Example Projects and Programs.”
BP1543 Media has also produced a unique collection of audio and visual pieces to highlight important reflections from leaders in science and theology, including Alister McGrath, Joanna Leidenhag, April Maskiewicz Cordero, Justin Barrett, Joanna Collicutt, and more! The 7-part video series includes:
- Introduction: What is Theology?
- I. Inspire Integrative Work
- II. Build Trust
- III. Create Opportunities for Constructive Collaboration
- IV. Get Specific
- V. Include Scientists and Theologians
- Conclusion: Exploring the WHY of Science-Engaged Theology
Initial data from research meetings with dozens of scholars were transformed into a comprehensive strategy document. It carefully articulates ways to inspire sustainable, collaborative work between human scientists and theologians. The next stage was a methodical plan for soliciting feedback on the initial strategy ideas and the five emerging themes with the target audiences. Next, a robust “example document” was produced. It outlines more than 20 specific activities, divided into four categories of focus, which could be deployed as part of both short and long term strategies.
As part of the evaluation and feedback process Blueprint 1543 co-hosted an event at AAR in 2022 and convened the Institute for Research on Psychology and Religion (IRPS) in January 2023. This included additional consulting with leaders from funding bodies, psychological scientists, theologians, and philosophers. Follow-up conversations were then scheduled and recorded for a set of podcast and video resources, which further highlight recurring themes we uncovered, bringing a personal and humanizing dimension to this work.
The vision cast by the research process gained further clarity as Blueprint consulted with nine mission-aligned organizations and five potential project partners. These conversations made it clear that there is resonance with core elements of the strategy, and enthusiasm about several example projects among leaders who are most invested in science-engaged theology.
